We will most likely not run out of Purple Hearts for decades.
Prior to the planned invasion of Japan, US govt had ordered something like 500,000 Purple Hearts. They simply expected Japan to resist with the ferocity shown in earlier actions, and planned ahead by ordering enough Purple Hearts.
